Ole Miss loses to Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl

The football team at Ole Miss, which has won 18 games in the last two seasons, still has a promising future. However, the second part of the 2022 season will be rather burning.

In the Texas Bowl on Wednesday night, the Rebels’ first half against Texas Tech was a self-inflicted tragedy. It featured three interceptions from sophomore quarterback Jaxson Dart and one of five fourth down attempts, one of which was a failed fake punt. At halftime, Ole Miss was behind 26-7 and was defeated 42-25 by the Red Raiders.

In the first two quarters, Dart threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. In the first half, two of the Rebels’ four unsuccessful fourth down attempts were made on their own field.

On fourth down, Ole Miss finished the day with two of seven. There were 13 fourth-down attempts between the two teams. Five times the Rebels turned the ball over, resulting in 16 points for Texas Tech (8-5, 5-4 Big 12).

You can’t foresee how games will turn out, therefore that’s what goes into those. They have a fantastic offensive. Late in the second half of the season, our defence has been a problem. They had lost quite a few yards. A lot of yards, but not as many points,” stated head coach Lane Kiffin. You’re going to have to steal some things and take some chances, it was stated before you entered. Though those were important choices, it wasn’t the plan to fail. They failed, and I believe that it halted and started early. It was discouraging because (Texas Tech) successfully set us up with a number of fourth downs that were very comparable to our own.

The Rebels (8-5, 4-4 SEC) started the season 7-0 before dropping five of their final six games, including four straight to end the year.

In the end, Dart completed 25 of 41 passes for 361 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions, and a fumble that was lost.

“It makes me really angry. I believe that each and every week, I put a lot of effort into preparing for games like this. When you commit expensive errors and don’t perform to the level I need to perform at to help our team win the game (it’s disheartening), “said Dart. But I’m just going to use that as motivation to work harder the next year.

The Rebels chose to receive the opening kickoff, and on their first unsuccessful fourth-down pass attempt of the evening, they stopped inside the Texas Tech 40. Tyler Shough was intercepted in the end zone by junior defensive back Trey Washington, his first career interception, as the Red Raiders turned around and advanced to the Ole Miss 11-yard line.

On its subsequent drive, Ole Miss attempted another pass at fourth down while starting from its own 29 but was unsuccessful. This time, though, the Red Raiders would not be stopped close to the goal line as Shough took the shot himself from two yards out on fourth to score Texas Tech’s first points of the contest.

On the first play of the subsequent drive, Dart connected with junior Dayton Wade for a 37-yard connection, setting up Evans’ eight-yard touchdown run that tied the score at seven.

Near the end of the first quarter, with the Red Raiders down 10-7, Dart was intercepted on fourth-and-3 at their 18. Once more, the Red Raiders advanced into Ole Miss territory all the way to the 3-yard line. The Rebels stepped up at that point, stuffing three straight plays, the last of which was a fourth-down throw to a group of receivers that rookie cornerback Davison Igbinosun intercepted far short of the goal line.

In order to set up Shough’s second fourth-down touchdown run, Dart was intercepted for the second time on a pass intended for junior Jordan Watkins. The Red Raiders scored a field goal to make the score 20-7 after the Rebels failed to execute a fake punt.

With little under 30 seconds left in the half, Shough completed a touchdown throw after Dart fumbled, giving Texas Tech a 19-point advantage.

Watkins caught a wonderfully arced 11-yard touchdown ball from Ole Miss on the team’s opening drive of the second half to put the Rebels within three points.

Later in the third quarter, senior defensive end Tavius Robinson forced the second of his two fumbles for the game, but Ole Miss once more failed to convert a fourth-and-short attempt. With with 9:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, Ole Miss trailed by 19 points. However, things turned interesting when senior wide receiver Malik Heath scored a one-handed touchdown catch with just over three minutes remaining, cutting the deficit to 10. Texas Tech, however, completed the Red Raiders’ victory by returning the onside kick attempt all the way for a touchdown.

It’s unfortunate because this would have been an excellent game to win down here against a really talented team and (how to) go out for these people who were the last game,” Kiffin said.
