In the upcoming second season of What If…?, Cate Blanchett movies actor will reprise her role as Hela, Goddess of Death, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bryan Andrews, the director of What If…?, according to Laughing Place, said at the Lightbox Expo that the Thor: Ragnarok actress had recorded dialogue for an episode starring her character, though he provided no additional information. It was mentioned by Andrews that the animated Marvel series’ second season will begin right where the previous one left off, so it will be intriguing to see how Cate Blanchett might be included in the plot.
Given that it naturally deals with tales of alternative realities and different timelines, What If…? is undoubtedly the simplest way to bring a character back to Marvel. Each episode of the show explores pivotal incidents from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how they may have turned out differently as they are narrated and observed by Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright). We already saw what would have happened if Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) had been given the Super-Soldier Serum rather than Steve Rogers (Josh Keaton, filling in for Chris Evans), what would have happened if Ultron (Ross Marquand) had been successful in assuming control of the Vision’s body, and what would have happened if Thor (Chris Hemsworth) had a more raucous social life.
There are a number of ways in which Cate Blanchett’s return to Marvel as Hela may occur, but it seems quite probable that Thor will make another appearance. One possibility for What If…? is to revisit the events of Thor: Ragnarok, in which Anthony Hopkins’ exiled daughter of Odin (Cate Blanchett) captured Asgard and ultimately perished in its obliteration. Any number of insignificant choices could result in an altogether different tale, such as one in which Hela defeats Thor and Loki or in which Thor and Hela collaborate (Tom Hiddleston).
Or the storytellers could go back even further, to the primordial era when Cate Blanchett assisted Odin in establishing the cosmos, and present a tale there. The Valkyries, who all perished battling Hela in the canonical Marvel reality with the exception of Tessa Thompson, may have joined her side in the conflict, therefore perhaps Hela’s rebellion against Odin succeeded in making her the King of Valhalla during peacetime.
Or, perhaps (bear with us) some cosmic force puts together a dark version of the team of heroes that Uatu formed in the What If…? season one conclusion, bringing Cate Blanchett back to defeat Thor once more. The beautiful thing about parallel universes is that everything is possible in them.
What If…second ?’s season has not yet been officially announced, although it will probably start streaming on the Disney+ service in the first quarter of 2023. Cate Blanchett and several of the season one voice performers, including Jeff Goldblum, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeffrey Wright, and Taika Waititi, will appear in at least one episode. We anticipate hearing a surprising number of new voices and intriguing alternate incarnations of familiar personalities, and we are already anticipating Cate Blanchett’s return.
